Like many moms and dads, be prepared. Intestinal colic is gone through by most babies at some point during the first three months. Ways of handling intestinal colic have been passed on for generations through word of mouth or via baby books and magazines. Intestinal colic is a condition that everybody seems to know but few can comprehend, in fact, up until now, scientists and medical experts still do not know what causes intestinal colic. Pediatricians are still attempting to determine the cause of a condition known as a “colicky baby” which includes symptoms like upset tummy, pain and vomiting.

Many are of the opinion that intestinal colic is genetic and will be passed on from moms and dads to their infants. Some put the blame on allergens that infants get from their food or from the breast milk that their moms supply them. Others think that intestinal colic is just gas that gets stuck inside the still developing systems of the baby. Premature babies pickup some what later because of their bodies not well formed. Intestinal colic cycles will occur around the second month of life and will diminish by month 3 and finish by month 4.

There is no way moms and dads are going to miss intestinal colic symptoms as the symptoms are very easily noticed. This is not a major problem for the infants. Of course you need to know the difference between real intestinal colic and anything else which may be more serious because to mis-diagnose the ailment would be dangerous. For this reason, if you suspect your baby is colicy, it is urgent that you confer with your pediatrician so that he or she can rule out the more serious conditions. Since there are no tests that can pinpoint to colic, the most that doctors can do is to exclude other potential causes of crying and screaming occurrences.

Things like a obstructed intestine, stomach infection, ear infection, a minor scratch in the infant’s eye etc. can result in the same reactions. Other reasons are obstacle in the digestive tracts, hernia and troubles in the bowel. Curing intestinal colic or treating it is out of the question, it is because the specific cause is not yet determined. One of the best things that parents can do for their colicky baby is to provide as much soothing comfort as they can for their little one.

One of the matters that you can do is to walk your baby and to wrap him or her up in a swaddling and have them hear to some soothing music that will settle them down during an episode. Be careful not to feed your infant, sometimes parents do this just because the infant cries. You should also determine with your physician if you suspect that your baby has allergies to the food or liquids he’s taking in, including breast milk.
